A major waterfront redevelopment project in Norwalk has cleared a key hurdle.

The city's Planning and Zoning Commission unanimously approved a new zoning district for the former Manresa power plant site, paving the way for the proposed Manresa WILDS public park.

Developers say the project would open nearly two miles of Long Island Sound shoreline to the public.

The approval follows months of debate over traffic and development concerns. Project leaders say revised plans eliminate lodging uses from the proposal and cap parking at 200 spaces.
