A fire at the Glenwood apartment complex on Peach Lane in Old Bridge displaced between 25 and 30 residents Friday evening after flames broke out and part of the roof collapsed.

The fire started just after 5 p.m., forcing families to evacuate their homes. One resident said he was getting ready to take his family to Six Flags when his wife told him to get out because the building was on fire.

Residents scrambled to escape, and some needed help retrieving essential medication. Dave Benyola said a firefighter went into his apartment to get medication for him and his son, who both have asthma.

As families faced an uncertain night without a place to stay, neighbors stepped in to help. Old Bridge Township Administrator Anna Feltz said residents quickly gathered blankets, jackets and toys for a 2 1/2 -year-old girl affected by the fire. Others shared food with displaced families.

Residents said they were still unable to return to their apartments, and it remained unclear when they would be allowed back inside. One family's cat was also still missing.

The cause of the fire remains unknown.
