Two young humpback whales are stranded offshore near the Fire Island National Seashore, according to the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society.

The juvenile whales were reported to the agency Wednesday morning.

AMSEAS says both are being closely monitored as responders assess their conditions and determine the best way to provide supportive care.

Officials say efforts are focused on evaluating the whales' health and watching for signs they may be able to refloat on their own.

AMSEAS says if the whales are unable to refloat during the next high tide, responders will reassess their options.

Several other humpback whales have also been spotted in the area and are being monitored.

The public is being urged to keep a safe distance from the protected marine mammals.

This is a developing story.
