A turtle found trapped in a cage at the Geiger Park Lake in Deer Park has died, according to the Suffolk County SPCA.
The organization said the turtle was pronounced dead on Aug. 25, two days after it was found zip-tied to a cage and submerged underwater with a fishhook stuck in its mouth.
The SPCA said the reward money has increased to $3,000 after the New York State Humane Association provided an additional $1,000.
As News 12 previously reported, the turtle was discovered while Town of Babylon Park rangers were investigating a complaint about numerous e-bikes in Geiger Park Lake.
There the rangers pulled the cage from the lake and found the turtle tethered inside.
The turtle was rushed to the West Islip Veterinary Hospital for emergency treatment.
