Hofstra University professors reach agreement to avoid strike ahead of first day of classes

Officials say negotiations continued throughout the weekend, and the progress achieved was sufficient for both sides to agree that extending the existing contract was the appropriate course while discussions continue.

News 12 has learned that Hofstra University professors will not walk off the job on the first day of classes.

The Hofstra Chapter of the American Association of University Professors says “The Hofstra AAUP and Hofstra University Administration made significant progress in contract negotiations over the weekend and reached agreement late Sunday night on several major terms.”

As a result, the parties have agreed to extend the current collective bargaining agreement through Friday, Sept. 4, providing additional time to finalize outstanding terms and work toward an overall agreement.

Officials say negotiations continued throughout the weekend, and the progress achieved was sufficient for both sides to agree that extending the existing contract was the appropriate course while discussions continue.

"We have made meaningful progress on several major issues, and we believe continuing negotiations this week provides the best path toward reaching a fair agreement," said Anthony Basile, President of the Hofstra AAUP. "Our faculty members have demonstrated tremendous solidarity throughout this process, and our focus remains on securing a contract that supports our faculty, our students and the continued strength of Hofstra University."

The Union will meet with its membership Monday evening to provide an update on the negotiations and discuss the progress that has been made.
