Southampton Village is considering major changes to its beach parking rules that could require some beachgoers to pay up to $600 for a permit.
The proposal would require drivers parking at village beaches to have either a Southampton Village beach permit or a Southampton Town Trustees permit. That includes Road D, one of the few village beaches where a parking permit is not currently required.
Under the proposal, village residents would receive up to three beach permits for free. Locals who live outside the village would pay $300, while summer visitors could pay $600.
Southampton Village Trustee Ed Simioni says the proposal began as an effort to address contractor trucks taking up beach parking spaces, but he believes the plan has gone too far.
Simioni has been placing flyers on vehicles to warn beachgoers about the proposed changes.
The village board is expected to hear from residents Thursday night. If approved, the new parking rules could take effect as early as January.
