A 63-year-old Lindenhurst grandmother is in serious condition after being struck by her own vehicle, which police say was set in motion by her 8-year-old grandchild Monday morning.

According to Suffolk County police, the child got into his grandmother’s Honda, which was parked in the driveway of a Wellwood Avenue home, and pressed the vehicle’s start button at approximately 10 a.m.

Police say Gina Bente saw the car rolling down the driveway and attempted to get inside to stop it. As she tried to intervene, the driver’s-side door struck her, causing her to fall and hit her head on the pavement.

The vehicle continued into the roadway before striking a curb and coming to a stop in the middle of the street.

Bente was transported to Good Samaritan University Hospital in serious condition. The child was not injured.
