One Suffolk woman had a sweet idea to spice up your morning coffee.
Smithtown resident Carolyn Barbarite is the founder of JavaMelts Flavored Sugar, a product she says is the first of its kind. Made with pure cane sugar and natural flavors, the flavored sugars are vegan, non-GMO, kosher and gluten-free.
The idea first came to Barbarite in 2016 while her husband was making her a cup of coffee. “On the side of me were individually wrapped caramel and marshmallow candy hearts, and as he was pouring me a cup of coffee, I had my ah-ha moment,” Barbarite said. “I said, wait a minute, would it be crazy if we could pick this up, which is now flavored sugar.”
That moment sparked the beginning of a business.
JavaMelts can be stirred into coffee and tea, mixed into yogurt and oatmeal, blended into protein shakes, baked into desserts or used as a finishing sugar. The flavored sugars can even be used to rim cocktail glasses. Popular flavors include caramel, French vanilla, mocha and hazelnut.
Barbarite says creativity has always been part of who she is. “I come from a family of engineers. I’m not an engineer myself, but when I see items or things, my brain automatically goes to make it better,” she said.
For Barbarite, the most rewarding part of building the business is hearing from customers. “I think the most rewarding part of this is hearing from my customers and knowing no matter what type of day they can enjoy a little part of me and my family as part of their life,” she said.
