New York City’s Department of Health is raising awareness about rabid raccoons in Brooklyn.

The DOH said there have been three reported incidents so far this year.

On April 6, one rabid raccoon was reported near Gerritsen and Seba avenues in Gerritsen Beach.

Another was reported in West Midwood in late March.

The third incident happened in February on Avenue I and East 24th Street in Midwood.

Health officials said no one was hurt. However, a dog came into contact with a raccoon. Officials say that dog was up to date on its vaccines and received a booster.

The DOH said having three incidents in four months is unusual, given that recent years had no more than two reports each.

The agency plans on putting oral rabies vaccine baits in the borough.

The DOH said that anyone who see a raccoon being aggressive, disoriented, paralyzed, or unusually tame should avoid contact and call 311.
