A dump truck carrying dirt overturned on Wednesday afternoon on Route 17 northbound in Paramus, temporarily shutting down the roadway, authorities said.

Paramus police said the crash happened at about 1:20 p.m. near Sears Drive. The truck overturned, spilling its cargo and blocking all northbound lanes.

According to police, the driver told officers he was traveling in the center lane when another vehicle exiting Sears Drive cut him off. The driver said that he swerved to avoid a collision, causing the truck to overturn.

The driver was being evaluated for minor injuries, police said.

Route 17 northbound was closed at Midland Avenue, with traffic diverted from the area.

The highway has since reopened.
