The rising costs of oil are hitting the wallets of Long Islanders and Connecticut residents again, this time in how much you have to pay to cross the Long Island Sound.

Both the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson and the Cross Sound ferries announced fuel surcharges this month.

The ride from Port Jefferson to Bridgeport now costs 4.5% more. This has increased one-way tickets by $3 from $74 to $77 off-peak and from $76 to $79 peak for a vehicle with a passenger.

The fee went into effect on April 15.

In a post online, the operator said, "This surcharge will be reviewed weekly and may be adjusted upward or downward based on fuel costs and market conditions."

Travelers going from Orient Point to New London, Connecticut, are paying even more.

The Cross Sound Ferry currently has a 9.5% surcharge on tickets. That number is down from 10.7% a week prior.

The company wrote online, "Due to the volatility of fuel costs, Cross Sound Ferry uses a floating fuel surcharge."

The latest fee began on April 13.

Both companies said they will reevaluate the fees every seven days.

The Cross Sound Ferry is expected to adjust costs today and the Bridgeport & Port Jefferson Ferry is scheduled to do the same on Wednesday.
