A former NYPD sergeant known as the "cooler killer" is set to be released from prison after his bail was paid for by the Sergeant Benevolent Society's team of attorneys, according to a statement posted Friday by SBA President Vincent Vallelong.
The statement says that Erik Duran will be released from prison and remain free throughout the time of his appeal.
On April 9, Duran was sentenced to three to nine years in state prison for killing Bronx resident Eric Duprey. It's a case that drew national attention and intense reactions both inside and outside the courtroom.
"This is a major win for Erik and his family and for law enforcement officers around the country," Vallelong wrote.
News 12 reached out to the SBA, Duran's legal team, and the attorney general's office for more information and is waiting to hear back.
