A Roosevelt man is facing 25 year to life in prison for viciously beating a man to death behind Chuck E. Cheese during a robbery in April 2022.
Dennis Ray, also known as “Midnight,” was convicted Tuesday following a jury trial on counts of murder, assault, and robbery, according to Nassau County District Attorney Anne Donnelly. The jury deliberated for four and a half hours before returning the 64-year-old’s verdict.
At around 11 p.m. on April 22, 2022, Ray and co-defendant Tyrell Guthrie beat Jose Osma behind the Chuck E. Cheese on Fulton Avenue in Hempstead during the course of a robbery. The beating was so severe that Osma slipped in and out of a coma several times, Donnelly said.
Osma, of Copiague, was found the following morning by a passerby and taken to the hospital unconscious, suffering from numerous skull and orbital fractures. The 59-year-old had no identification and was listed as a “John Doe” until his family filed a missing persons report and was able to reconnect with him days after the attack, according to Donnelly.
Osma died about a year later from his injuries after continuous brain surgeries, paralysis, rehab and hospitalizations.
“Jose Osma was beaten to within an inch of his life during a robbery in 2022 and what followed was an endless cycle of brain surgeries, paralysis, rehab and hospitalizations until Jose sadly succumbed to his extensive injuries a year later,” said Donnelly. “Dennis Ray showed no remorse for his violent assault, even bragging minutes after the attack about the stolen money and the heinous crime he committed to get it."
Guthrie was arrested by the Nassau County Police Department near the scene while holding a jacket stained with Osma's blood - the same jacket Ray was wearing on the night of the assault.
He was sentenced to 18 years in prison on Jan. 29, 2024 after pleading guilty to manslaughter.
