The Nassau County Legislature honored an officer and his K-9 for their courageous rescue of a missing woman with dementia.

Jack Castronova and his partner EJ responded to a call of a woman missing amid freezing conditions in December.

As the duo began to search the surrounding area, EJ’s sense of smell led them to an unheated horse barn in Brookville.

They found the woman inside disoriented and showing signs of hypothermia.

Castronova remained there and monitored her condition until EMS arrived at the scene.

Authorities say their actions were directly responsible for preventing serious injury or death of the missing woman.

Police officials gathered in at the Nassau County Legislature in Mineola Monday to recognize their heroism, naming Castronova and EJ Legislative Top Cops for March 2026.
