A group of activists accosted Rep. Tom Suozzi about ICE funding shortly after taking the podium at a temple in Roslyn Tuesday night.

The protest that took place during a community conversation at Temple Beth Sholom seemed to be coordinated by a group called Climate Defiance, which posted some of the encounter on X.

It had harsh words for the Glen Cove lawmaker, who voted for a Homeland Security spending measure last week.

"As a Jewish man, I have never felt safer than when there is a mass gestapo in the street. So, thank you Congressman Tom Suozzi for funding ICE," one person yelled out.

Suozzi initially defended his vote but expressed regret later, after ICE agents had shot and killed Alex Pretti in Minneapolis.

During the outbursts, Suozzi let those speak their frustrations and said it was OK, "if people want to express themselves - that's what happens in today's world unfortunately."

“I failed to view the DHS funding vote as a referendum on the illegal and immoral conduct of ICE in Minneapolis," said Suozzi to those in attendance.

Also on Tuesday, Democratic Rep. Ilhan Omar was confronted and sprayed with a liquid at an event in Minnesota.

Political strategist Mike Dawidziak says the incidents show just how deep division in the U.S. is right now.

He told News 12 that the, “political climate right now is about as polarized as it's been since the Civil War, I mean you can't really get much more polarized than we are now."

Wendy Jager-Hyman, Temple Beth Sholom's social action committee chairwoman and former president, released the following statement:

What they did is not only wrong, but counterproductive. It was disrespectful and upsetting to the congregation. That kind of angry disruption, especially in a place of worship, is bad for the country. The Congressman was very respectful and stayed for over an hour and a half to answer every single question. He explained himself clearly and succinctly. The congregation truly appreciated the open and candid conversation.”
