Town of Huntington touts 6,000 tons of salt to treat roadways

Preparations are underway in the Town of Huntington as highway crews work around the clock ahead of Sunday’s winter storm.
Town officials say plow trucks and other highway department vehicles are being serviced, while salt deliveries continue rolling in as part of the plan to keep local roads safe. As of Saturday, more than 6,000 tons of salt are stockpiled at the Huntington Highway Department, with additional deliveries happening throughout the day.
“The minute we see a flurry, they’re hitting the road,” said Huntington Highway Superintendent Andre Sorrentino. “We get out there and pre-treat the roads as soon as it starts.”
Sorrentino added that crews are also prepared for the bitter cold expected with the storm, using specialized salt designed to be effective in lower temperatures.
“If people see that there is no salt on the road, usually there is. When it hits the snow, it’s clear,” Sorrentino said. “We’re going to be prepared because it’s going to be so cold. We have another batch of salt in the back that’s made for 20 degrees and lower.”
Residents say the town’s early preparation helps ease concerns ahead of the storm.
“It really does help keep the roads dry,” said Huntington resident Mary Porter. “I don’t know if with this much snow it will make a difference.”
Huntington officials are urging residents to stay off the roads during the storm if possible and to avoid parking on neighborhood streets so plow crews can safely and efficiently clear roadways.
Some say they plan to stay home and ride out the storm.
“Probably some reading. Probably some television,” said Charles Porter, when asked about his Sunday plans. “Maybe some house projects, shoveling. Maybe we’ll play with the dogs in the backyard once the snow comes.”
Residents across Long Island have also been getting ready throughout the week. Some local stores report running low on winter supplies such as ice melt, shovels and snow brushes. Brinkmann’s in Sayville says demand has been so high they ordered two emergency shipments of ice melt and a trailer load of snow throwers.
