Long Island nonprofit steps up to help seniors during cold snap

The frigid temperatures that are once again expected on Long Island this weekend are particularly challenging for our region's seniors.
The EAC Network is working to help seniors during this time of need.
The Garden City based not-for-profit, which hosts and organizes a series of social service programs, is working to meet the needs of seniors in a variety of ways, particularly during the cold winter months.
"We're delivering meals for seniors. And especially in this weather, its hard for people to get out," Neela Mukherjee Lockel, EAC Network President & CEO, said. "We provide Meals on Wheels to about almost 600 clients."
Mukherjee Lockel says the agency also assisted 8,000 people with home heating help in 2025, with the need trending higher so far this year. The EAC Network also operates four senior centers on Long Island.
"One of the things that we're doing is ensuring that the seniors who are coming to our senior centers have a warm, safe place to be, particularly during these months, "Mukherjee Lockel said.
"A warm, safe place to be, and a hot meal, and activities, things to keep them busy, things that they enjoy doing."
