Suffolk police report dozens of crashes due to slick roadways
Although trucks tried to make the roads as safe as possible, Suffolk County police said they responded to dozens of crashes due to slick conditions.
Areas of Long Island saw anywhere from a dusting of snow to a few inches on the ground Sunday morning before a second round of snow in the evening.
Town officials said they prepared for the weekend winter weather since Friday when they poured brine on the roads.
Salt and sand were spread Sunday morning, and plows went out again to clear the night's snow accumulation.
Although trucks tried to make the roads as safe as possible, Suffolk County police said they responded to dozens of crashes due to slick conditions. Their advice is to stay off the roads if you can until conditions improve.
“We'll have the roads thoroughly salted so it's safe for residents to go out for the early commute tomorrow," Hempstead Town Supervisor John Ferretti said. "I don't anticipate that the commute tomorrow for those who are working, or those who just want to go out and celebrate the holiday, will be an issue.”
Ferretti said his crews will monitor conditions overnight, and if there is more than 2.5 inches of accumulation, they’ll plow the roads.
As temperatures drop into the overnight hours, town officials recommend drivers use extra caution as there could be black ice on the roads, even if it looks like they are cleared and salted.
