The cold weather did not stop hundreds of people from joining a memorial walk for Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in Coram.

The event, hosted by the Longwood School District, is dedicated to King’s message of unity, peace and service.

Participants gathered at the elementary school before walking a half mile to the Coram fire house.

During the walk, the words of King’s iconic “I Have a Dream” speech echoed through the streets.

School officials say the event serves as a reminder for communities to stand together, move forward and keep the dream alive.

"A lot of his work involved bringing people together, walking and holding hands together. Celebrating each other and pushing for a cause of peace. So, we walked today to bring that back,” said Vaughn Denton, Longwood schools’ assistant superintendent for human resources.
