New parking restrictions approved near UBS Arena aimed at easing neighborhood congestion

Residents living near the arena say traffic and parking issues have increased significantly since the venue opened.

Parking around UBS Arena has become a growing challenge for nearby residents, especially during hockey games and major events. In response, the Hempstead Town Board has approved additional parking restrictions aimed at easing congestion and keeping neighborhood streets clear.

Residents living near the arena say traffic and parking issues have increased significantly since the venue opened. On game nights and during concerts, drivers often flood nearby residential blocks looking to avoid arena parking fees, which can range from $20 to $50.

The area across Hempstead Turnpike has been particularly impacted. Currently, drivers must have a resident parking permit to park on streets between Wellington Road and Locustwood Boulevard. On Tuesday, the town board voted to expand that permit-only zone to include Sussex Road as well.

Town officials say the expansion is intended to provide relief for residents who struggle to find parking during events at the arena.

Some neighbors say the restrictions are making a difference.

“It definitely does help,” said Sarah Jean-Francois, noting that more parking spots have opened up on event days.

Others, however, remain skeptical. Elmont resident Monserrat Ortega says visitors often ignore the posted signs, permits or not.

“It’s been basically the same,” Ortega said. “With or without permits, people still come. It’s still going to be chaotic.”

Jean-Francois, however, says enforcement is visible, with police regularly checking for valid permits.

“I do definitely see cops come around and they’ll check to see if the parking permit is valid,” she said.

News 12 has reached out to a representative from UBS Arena for comment on the parking concerns and the newly expanded restrictions.
