Over 1,000 Long Island nurses could strike as contract talks stall
The nurses work at the Northwell Health hospitals in Huntington, Syosset and Plainview.
More than 1,000 nurses at three Long Island hospitals may walk off the job in the coming days as negotiations with Northwell Health remain unresolved.
The nurses, who work at Huntington Hospital, Syosset Hospital and Plainview Hospital, voted last Friday to give a 10-day strike notice after their contract with Northwell expired. If negotiations fail, the strike will take place on Jan. 12.
Staffing ratios are at the center of the dispute. Nurses are demanding improved staff-to-patient ratios for better care and working conditions.
New York State Nurses Association representatives say Northwell has not returned to the bargaining table since the vote to strike.
A spokesperson with Northwell provided News 12 with this comment.
“Those accusations are blatantly false. We have been negotiating in good faith for the last 12 months and have made significant progress.”
