A Nassau County family was forced to evacuate their Woodmere home early Thursday morning after a car crashed into the house, causing severe structural damage and rendering it unlivable.

The incident occurred just before 2 a.m. on East Broadway, according to police. Authorities say an 18-year-old male driver lost control of a 2022 Kia and slammed into the lower level of the home, where a family of four was inside at the time.

While no one inside the house was injured, the impact caused extensive damage. Much of the lower level had to be boarded up, and the Town of Hempstead later deemed the home unsafe for occupancy. The family has been forced to stay elsewhere during the holiday season.

Neighbors say the timing makes the situation especially heartbreaking, as the family is in the middle of celebrating Hanukkah.

“I think it’s horrible. It’s so sad, especially with young children, to evacuate in the middle of the night,” said Woodmere resident Dena Fuchs. “It’s really something crazy, and in the middle of Hanukkah for them to have to leave their own house.”

The driver was treated at the scene by a medic for minor injuries. Police say no criminality is suspected at this time.
