Proposal aims to build 288-unit condominium complex in Kings Park

There is a plan to build condos on a 72-acre property in Kings Park on one of the last remaining active farms in Smithtown.
It's a plan that has some residents concerned it will hurt their neighborhood.
"I think it'll have a negative impact on the traffic situation in the Kings Park community," said Elizabeth McCarthy, of Kings Park.
Beechwood Smithtown LLC has applied to rezone the Raleigh Farm and Correia Properties to build a 288-unit condominium complex.
Currently, the land is zoned for both residential and light industry.
If approved, the change would double the residential area.
Mike Rosato with the Kings Park Community Association says the condos would create heavier traffic in the area, congest schools and hurt the environment.
"The largest privately owned forested area left in the town of Smithtown," said Rosato.
The Town of Smithtown says even if town board votes to approve the zoning change, construction on condos would still be years away. The developer would have to go through reviews and approvals before building permits are issued.
The developer is proposing to build everything from smaller starter homes, to villas and even apartments, hoping to bring in young families and empty-nesters.
Smithtown is holding a public hearing Tuesday night to hear from the community.
The town says the board plans to vote on the zoning change within 30 days.
News 12 reached out to the developer, Beechwood, for a statement on the proposed condo complex and is waiting to hear back.
