Black Lab Friday: How a service dog named Nantucket changed a Port Jefferson girl's life

While crowds spent Black Friday searching for bargains, Canine Companions chose to celebrate differently, renaming the day “Black Lab Friday” and showcasing the remarkable work their service dogs do.
Nantucket is one of those black labs, helping Mady Sipperly daily.
"I love him so much. He always comes with me to Molloy," Mady said. "And if I get nervous, he will sit on my lap."
Mady got Nantucket a year and a half ago from Canine Companions. The organization trains and provides service dogs to those in need.
Mady's mom, Laura, says her daughter has become more independent with her four-legged partner by her side
"We've noticed an improvement in her language, her social skills, and her responsibilities and overall confidence," said Laura.
Nantucket knows over 40 commands, ranging from basics like sitting and giving his paw, to opening and closing drawers for Mady. And he's still picking up new skills.
"Just the other day, we taught him how to come in between our legs to keep him protected in a crowd. He learns tricks so quickly," Laura said.
He was trained from puppyhood with Canine Companions, tailored specifically to Mady's needs.
"He will only bark on command, and as you can see, he's just the kindest, gentlest dog you could ever ask for," Laura said. "You really can't believe how much it will change your life. You won't realize you need it until you get it."
Through Giving Tuesday on Dec. 2, Canine Companions is promoting their book "Andy: A Dog's Tale," which is about a puppy wanting to become a Canine Companion service dog.
