Flooding threatens Freeport businesses as Nassau County declares state of emergency

Nassau County is under a state of emergency as a coastal storm brings steady rain, powerful wind gusts and the threat of dangerous flooding — especially in low-lying, waterfront communities like Freeport.
Earlier on Sunday, high tide sent water flowing into Jeremy’s Ale House on the Nautical Mile. Several inches flooded the popular waterfront bar while employees and customers were inside.
“As soon as the high tide started rolling in, [the water] just crept on in from both sides,” said Fidel Abreu, of Freeport. “Had water on both ends.”
Nassau County officials are urging residents to stay alert. The county executive issued the state of emergency in response to rising flood concerns and the potential need for emergency response in vulnerable areas.
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino said that emergency crews are on standby.
“In the Town of Oyster Bay, we have over 200 pieces of equipment at the ready — including chainsaws, high water vehicles, and over 40 vehicles equipped with ladders — in the event we need to carry out evacuations,” Saladino said.
Sunday's nor'easter prompted Gov. Kathy Hochul to declare a state of emergency.
