A fire at Northwell Glen Cove Hospital Saturday temporarily shut down its emergency department for part of the morning and afternoon. It reopened around 3:50 p.m.

Fire and smoke could be seen by nearby homeowners like Jimmy Sutherland.

“You can see they had smoke coming out of the second-floor windows before,” he said.

Fire officials say crews responded just after 11 a.m. to the flames on the hospital's roof. It was contained about an hour later. They say there is fire and water damage from an area in the emergency room up to its roof.

Hospital officials told News 12 that no one was hurt or evacuated. Seven patients who were in the ER at the time were relocated to other areas of the hospital.

There was no official word on what started the fire.

“We have a situation where we do generator evaluations – so, at this juncture, right now, we’re just looking that," said Kerri Scanlon, president of Glen Cove Hospital.

This is the second fire in two months at Glen Cove Hospital. News 12 reported that insulation caught fire there last month after a generator exhaust pipe overheated. No one was hurt in that incident..
