Gaming Commission says gun shop can’t raffle off rifle to raise funds for school team

The New York State Gaming Commission says that a Riverhead gun shop cannot raffle off a rifle to raise money for a school volleyball team.
News 12 previously reported about JJ Armor owner Joseph Oliver, who wanted to raffle off a semiautomatic rifle to raise money for his daughter’s varsity high school volleyball team.
Riverhead High School had said that it wouldn’t accept the money.
But the gaming commission says that Oliver is not authorized to even raffle off a gun because the shop is not a religious, charitable or nonprofit organization.
“This entity is not authorized. Any operation of a raffle outside of these parameters is considered unlawful – even if well-intentioned,” the agency wrote in a statement.
The agency says that the case will be referred to local law enforcement.
