A new police response team in Nassau County will act as an added layer of security for schools and communities, officials said.

The 40-person team will have regular briefings and “will get a forecast of what the issues are coming forward,” said Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder, whether it be an upcoming concert, protest or crime issue.

New safety measures will include license plate cameras, which use artificial intelligence.

“For instance, if there is a white car that has a golden retriever hanging out the window, that AI will get us every car that is white with a golden retriever hanging out the window," said Nassau County Executive Bruce Blakeman.

The police commissioner said Nassau County police officers regularly visit schools throughout the county in order to be familiar with the layout of each building in case of an emergency situation.

Schools are equipped with the Rave app, which allows school officials to call for help at the press of a button.
