A New York City police detective who was shot during an attempted arrest in Queens this morning has been identified as a Long Island resident and volunteer firefighter in Bethpage.

Sources tell News 12 that the injured detective, a 12-year veteran of the NYPD, lives in Plainview and volunteers at the Bethpage Fire Department. His name has not been released.

The incident occurred around 9 a.m. near the Whitestone Expressway. According to NYPD officials, the detective was assisting patrol officers in the arrest of a carjacking suspect when gunfire erupted. He was struck in the arm and leg during what police have now confirmed was a "friendly fire" incident.

The suspect, 28-year-old Kevin Dubuisson, was taken into custody. Authorities describe Dubuisson as a career criminal who was on parole at the time of the incident. He had been arrested just one day earlier but was released with an appearance ticket.

At a press conference, New York City Mayor Eric Adams placed blame squarely on the suspect for the events that unfolded.

"Regardless of who shot our detective, there’s one person responsible for starting the chain of events that led us into the hospital today," said Adams. "That is a man who should have been behind bars, not on our streets."

The wounded detective underwent surgery earlier today. His injuries are not believed to be life-threatening. Officials say he has a wife who is currently pregnant.
