Hurricane Erin’s indirect impacts force third day of NYC beach closures
The National Weather Service is warning about strong rip currents and dangerous surf, with waves breaking as high as 9 to 13 feet.

The indirect impacts of Hurricane Erin are keeping New York City beaches closed for swimming through Friday.
Mayor Eric Adams announced the extension on Thursday as powerful waves crashed onto the shorelines, raising the risk of dangerous rip currents.
Beachgoer Ray Ramsey said he came to watch the surf but agrees with the decision to keep people out of the water.
“I’ve seen how fast somebody can get swept out, even in this much water,” Ramsey said. “You lose your step or you slip, and all of a sudden you’re getting pulled out.”
Lifeguards will remain on duty during regular hours to prevent swimmers from entering the ocean.
While Friday will be sunny, beachgoers should enjoy the sand, not the surf.
