News 12 is learning a flight that took off from MacArthur Airport made an emergency landing because of engine trouble.

The FAA tells News 12 the JetBlue flight leaving Islip last week experienced a mechanical issue with one of its engines.

According to the FAA, this is the second JetBlue flight in less than a month that had to make an emergency landing in New York.

The FAA says the crew aboard last Wednesday's flight from Islip to Orlando reported an engine issue, making an emergency landing at JFK about an hour after takeoff.

JetBlue tells News 12 it was a mechanical issue with one of the plane’s engines.

The FAA says on July 15, another JetBlue flight taking off from JFK had to turn around and land back at the airport after the crew reported an engine issue on that flight, too.

Both JetBlue flights landed safely.

A flight instructor with Farmingdale State College says the NTSB will investigate what caused the mechanical issue.

He says crews usually inspect the engine before every flight.

“A very impressive outcome to land the aircraft safely, the absolute worst time for engine failure is right after takeoff because the aircraft is heavier with fuel and is full of passengers," said Michael Canders, a flight instructor at Farmingdale State College.

News 12 asked JetBlue what may have caused the mechanical issue with the engine, and to confirm how many people were onboard the flights and is waiting to hear back.
