A fiery scene unfolded on Banner Avenue in Brighton Beach Tuesday night.

Neighbors say a truck knocked down multiple power lines, setting off a fire and knocking out power across the right side of the block.

Con Edison confirms the crash happened just before 10 p.m. and involved a large truck that got hooked on overhead wires while trying to drive along Banner Avenue near East 12th Street. That impact pulled down several utility poles, causing sparks to fly and flames to erupt just feet from nearby homes.

Citizen app video shows a fire burning from a damaged line as firefighters taped off the area and worked to get the flames under control.

“I heard a big bang, and everybody came outside. We saw all the poles were down,” said John Molina, the super of a nearby building. “It was basically a tragedy… this happens too much. They need to put a sign—this corner’s too tight for trucks.”

Neighbors say this isn’t the first time a large vehicle has had trouble making the turn at that intersection. One resident shared a video showing the truck parked on the street shortly after the crash.

Con Edison says about 19 homes lost electricity overnight.

No injuries were reported.
