For many Long Islanders, paying monthly utility bills can be a struggle.

As the summer heat rises, so do those electric bills - but there is help out there.

PSEG Long Island’s Household Assistance Program can help cool the cost of cooling your home.

"This is a bill discount program to help customers people living in their households receive up to $45 off each month,” said Allison Puglia, with PSEG Long Island

You can qualify if you're enrolled in federal benefits like HEAP, Medicaid or SNAP.

If your air conditioners aren't working, PSEG will replace two for free.

PSEG offers free home assessments, identifying ways to make your house more energy efficient.

Organizations on Long Island may even make those repairs for free.

Community Development Long Island will make free repairs to your home to if you meet the income threshold. They will replace insulation, fix your roof or repair windows.

"As that window is being repaired, it may be identified that there's rot within the window frame, and so that would be another improvement that we'd want to make,” said Gwen O'Shea, president and CEO of Community Development Long Island.

In the winter, there is help out there to keep your home warm.

"We're delivering heating oil to families in need all winter long,” said Dennis Traina, owner of Tragar Home services.

Tragar started a nonprofit last year called "Fueling Kindness,” where homeowners can get up to 150 gallons of free heating oil.

"They get nominated by friends and family they know, and that gives us the opportunity to make a difference in their lives,” said Traina.

United Way's Project Warmth provides a one-time grant to pay for your fuel in heating emergencies.
