A deadly police-involved shooting happened in Brentwood on Friday afternoon, leaving neighbors shocked.

Bruce Boyd, 54, was shot and killed by police at around 12:30 p.m. after Suffolk County police officers responded to a welfare check at his home on Wurz Street.

Investigators say Boyd, a retired New York City correction officer with a history of mental illness, charged at the officers while holding a knife.

According to Suffolk County Police Commissioner Kevin Catalina, officers retreated down the front lawn as they repeatedly ordered Boyd to drop the weapon.

Despite these commands, Boyd continued to advance, at which point one of the officers discharged their firearm, striking him.

Officers performed CPR on Boyd at the scene, but he was pronounced dead at South Shore University Hospital.

A spokesperson for the New York Attorney General says the office is conducting a preliminary assessment of the incident.
