Residents of Hampton Bays are expressing concern after seeing exclusive photos of the Ponquogue Bridge, which was shut down last month due to significant damage.
News 12 has obtained an inspection report from a routine check in October of last year, revealing serious issues including cracked concrete, rusted steel, and water damage.
The inspection report, dated Oct. 9, highlighted these issues, but the bridge remained open until Feb. 21. It reopened on March 4 with a 5-ton weight restriction.
Suffolk County is responsible for maintaining the bridge, and a spokesperson from the county, Michael Martino, said in a statement, "Prior to reopening the Ponquogue Bridge, the DOT determined weight parameters safe for use."
County officials say engineers have been hired to work on a long-term solution for the bridge, and the state Department of Transportation will perform regular inspections will continue to monitor any areas of concern.
