Long Islanders came together at the Holocaust Memorial and Tolerance Center in Glen Cove Sunday to remember the 6,000,000 Jewish men, women and children who died during the Holocaust.

The event comes the day before the somber anniversary of International Holocaust Remembrance Day.

"We are reminded that we have to do better as a society and teach our children to be more tolerant and kinder," said Bernie Furshpan, of the Holocaust Memorial & Tolerance Center.

Holocaust survivors and their families took part in a candle lighting ceremony to remember the victims.

Participants also signed a pledge to speak out and stand up against intolerance.
