People were out and about Saturday getting shovels, ice melt and groceries before some significant snow hits Long Island.

Town highway departments are preparing for the snow. Hempstead Town Supervisor Don Clavin says stay off the roads if you can.

"Right after this storm, there is a significant cold front following it. So, we want to get as much snow and ice off these roads. So, if they don't drive it makes it easier for the team,” said Clavin.

He says crews will be clearing 1,200 miles of road its responsible for beginning tomorrow.

AAA is reminding those who must drive on Sunday to make sure tires are properly inflated, that windshield washer fluid is filled, and that you leave plenty of room for the car in front of you.

"On the road, remember posted speed limits are for ideal conditions, and it can take a vehicle up to nine times longer to stop in ice and snow compared to clear roads,” said Robert Sinclair, Jr.

John Pokorny, of Old Bethpage, said Sunday is a good day to “hunker down”

“Shovel a couple times to make sure it doesn't build up…and just get some [rest and relaxation],” he said.
