Long Beach residents woke up to an unexpected sight on their shores – a dead juvenile humpback whale.

Officials told News 12 that they were aware the dead whale was floating in the ocean, but were not sure where it would wash ashore. They estimate the whale to be about 30 feet in length.

The Atlantic Marine Conservation Society will perform a necropsy to determine the cause of the death before the whale is buried at the beach.
