The deadly West Nile virus has been detected in mosquitoes found in Morris County, according to officials.

The Borough of Madison is warning residents about mosquitoes around Memorial Park. The Morris County Mosquito Control will be there to treat the impacted areas this weekend.

News 12 ran into one parent picking up his son from soccer practice nearby who says they’ve been using a good amount of bug spray recently.

"He had an hour soccer practice and I just made sure that all his skin and I even hosed down his clothes to make sure to keep those misquotes away,” Rich Musa said.

The borough urges residents to:

  • Use EPA-registered insect repellent with DEET in it

  • Wear long sleeves and pants.

  • Dump or drain any standing water you may have in things like buckets or flowerpots

  • Use screens on windows and doors

  • Avoid spending time outdoors at dawn or dusk

  • Cover baby carriers like cribs or strollers

Officials say the virus is spread from mosquito bites and symptoms are similar to the flu. Two people have died in New Jersey from West Nile this year. Both were older adults from Cumberland and Mercer counties.

Older adults and people with weakened immune systems are at greater risk of developing severe illness.
