Gillibrand says that police officers often work overtime and have non-traditional schedules, making it challenging to arrange child care for their children.
These challenges have contributed to the NYPD's lowest membership numbers since 1990.
The proposed funding would come from the "Providing Child Care for Police Officers Act."
If passed, Gillibrand explains that federal grants would be utilized to build new child care facilities to support law enforcement families.
