Brookhaven Town Supervisor Dan Panico is asking Suffolk County to help families in need have safe housing.

Panico says the county is not inspecting all social service rental units and is not required to by law. He is asking Suffolk County to give the Town of Brookhaven the ability to do the inspections.

"We will go in, we will inspect the house, we will make sure they're safe for the residents who reside there," Panico says. "We will make sure that taxpayers are not funding potentially perilous housing conditions."

Panico is also urging the county not to pay rent to landlords who fail to comply with New York state's building and fire safety codes.
