First responders who responded to the scene of the Farmingdale bus crash in September were honored Monday by the superintendent of the Farmingdale Union Free School District.

The ceremony, called "Season of Thanks," honored state troopers, Nassau County police officers and Farmingdale teachers who helped during the incident.

Students will also be traveling across the state to hand out "thank you" cards to everyone who supported them following the ordeal.

"They decorated lawns, they lit their porches green and they dropped off groceries," said Superintendent Paul Defendini. "Schools across the world made videos to support us - the nation laid its eyes on our community and it marveled at its compassion and loving nature."

Educators Beatrice Ferrari and Gina Pelletiere were killed in the crash.

Forty students were injured, 37 of them have since returned to school.
