A Stony Brook University student is taking fire safety lessons she learned on campus to make a difference in her home country.

Samiha Khan, a freshman at the college, says fire safety is not seriously taught in Bangladesh and that fires occur too often.

“It is a life skill that you learn,” Khan says. “You don’t learn these in any classrooms, but it is a thing that can save lives.”

University fire officials travel across campus with live tutorials for students, demonstrating ways to extinguish different kinds of fires.

Khan recorded the fire safety programs and send them home to keep her family safe.

University fire officials remind students to know two ways out of any building in case of a fire and to have working smoke and carbon monoxide detectors.
