An abandoned gas station that caught fire on Tuesday is being called a dangerous eyesore by members of the community.

The building is at the corner of Hawkins Avenue and Portion Road.

There are plans to build a 7-Eleven on the vacant property at the corner of Hawkins Avenue and Portion Road. A site plan, permit application and fire prevention plan were submitted to the Town of Brookhaven, but construction has not gotten underway.

Darren Pelan, manager of Flanagan's Pub and Restaurant says something should be built there now that the smoke has cleared.

"When you have a corner store that’s really a hazard it doesn’t attract customers for sure. It definitely doesn’t. And all these businesses here are affected by it," Pelan says.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
