Island Harvest Food Bank and Nassau and Suffolk county law enforcement joined forces to help local veterans.

The group held a food drive in Plainview ahead of this weekend's Veteran Day observance. "There are a lot of veterans that are really suffering that have different challenges," says food coordinator, Bena Halloran, from Island Harvest.

Friday's food collection marks the 10th year of the collaboration between the food bank and police organizations.

James Shanahan, of the Nassau County Police Benevolent Association, added, "As police officers, we feel a sense of brotherhood with our military."

Island Harvest Food Bank serves 250 local veterans a month and over 3,000 veterans a year.

The organization says it will be holding several food drives this month and throughout December to help both veterans and struggling families during the holiday season.
