A Bay Shore family shared exclusive videos with News 12 of the moments after a car plowed into their backyard and fled the scene.

The family has lived at the home for over 30 years and says it could have been prevented.

It happened at around 3 a.m. Sunday at a home on East Forks Road.

Alberto Millan and his girlfriend were feeding their newborn twins when they heard a loud crash and looked out the window.

"Once we saw out the window, we just see the whole fence, and everything was destroyed back here. So, we ran down the steps as quick as possible,” said Millan.

A blue Toyota Camry kept driving on the dead-end street behind the home. The car then crashed through their fence, destroyed a fire pit and came to a stop right next to the home.

Millan says two men were in the car when they came outside.

"You could clearly tell that they were impaired, but they were trying to lie and say somebody else went that way. I clearly knew it was a lie. And then next thing you know, they both started walking back through the dead end,” he said.

Home security camera video captured what he described. The driver of the vehicle can be seen getting out and walking through the hole created in the fence. The passenger then followed.

No one else was hurt and the home wasn’t damaged, but Millan says it could have been a lot worse.

"I can tell you throughout summer nights especially, we have a lot of family back here,” said Millan. “Recently, last weekend, we had a bunch of people hanging out literally in this area."

Millan and his family say this could have been prevented if there was a guard rail at the dead-end street behind their home, something they say they've contacted the town about several times.

“My mom many times has asked the town, ‘How come there was no guardrail there?’” he said. “Nobody every would’ve thought that something like this would happen, but something that should have been there in the first place could’ve prevented all of this from happening.”

As they work to clean up the backyard, Millan shared his hopes as the investigation and search for the driver continues.

"They could find who did it and hopefully also the town looks at this and sees that there should've been a guardrail back there that could've prevented all this from happening," he said.

The Town of Islip told News 12 there's no record from the Department of Public Works of the resident asking for a guardrail.

The homeowners say the repairs could cost at least $10,000.

Suffolk County Police ask anyone with information to call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-220-TIPS.
