A wallaby spotted in Coney Island is now on Long Island.

Save the Animals Rescue Foundation (STAR) in Middle Island is taking care of the animal.

John Di Leonardo, executive director of Humane Long Island says the wallaby’s rescue was a result of an investigation by Humane Long Island and the NYPD’s Animal Cruelty Investigations Squad.

Police say a man was showing off the baby wallaby inside a bag on the Coney Island boardwalk before they arrested him and confiscated the animal.

“They are banned in New York City for a reason, “ Di Leonardo says. “These are wild animals. This baby Joey belongs with her mother in Australia. It does not belong in a cramped bag on a Coney Island boardwalk.”

The STAR foundation says this is their first wallaby that they’ve had there, but they are excited to be taking care of it.
