A man was crushed to death when a roof collapsed during a construction project Thursday in Syosset, police say.

Clara Reyes, of Roosevelt, spoke to News 12 in Spanish. She says her fiancee was killed while doing construction work on Stillwell Lane.

Reyes says her fiancé was a man who worked really hard. She says this situation feels like a bad dream.

The badly damaged building that was under construction belongs to the Jericho Water District.

Police confirm they responded around 8:52 a.m.

"They were on scaffolding working on the building," says Detective Capt. Stephen Fitzpatrick, of the Nassau County Police Department. "While these two males were on scaffolding working, they heard a crack and what happened was there was 30 trusses, which hold the roof up, which causes a domino effect. They attempted to run off the building."

Police say it took hours to get the 49-year-old victim out of the rubble.

Officials say a second victim was also injured, suffering a laceration to his face.

An official on the scene told News 12 one person was injured and taken to the hospital.

Jericho Water District Superintendent Peter Logan says the roof of the building was under construction for the past year.

"We have an advanced oxidation process treatment plant being built here now," Logan says. "The building they're working on at the moment is housing the carbon filters, which we call GACS."

Police have not released the name of the victim.
