Asa Ellerup and her two children returned to the Massapequa Park home Thursday following a 12-day search by investigators.

Ellerup briefly spoke about the condition of her home after the crime scene concluded.

"I got over the hurdle of what I saw inside," Ellerup said.

Heuermann's estranged wife did not say much but did give the OK to take photos and video of her family.

Ellerup filed for divorce from Heuermann shortly after he was arrested.

Michael Alcazar, a retired NYPD detective, says investigators executing a search warrant are allowed to search wherever is necessary to recover evidence.

He says it is important to preserve the evidence that could be found by any means necessary.

"They have to be careful not to destroy evidence, but sometimes it is necessary to damage the property of the residents to look for this evidence," Alcazar says.

Sources close to the investigation tell News 12 that law enforcement got an additional search warrant to scour the Heuermann's backyard following the initial search of the basement and house.

Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney says nothing of note was pulled from the ground during the excavation.
