A longtime summer staple in Nassau County is in danger of not opening this season.

Commissioner of Parks Darcy Belyea says the pool at Christopher Morley Park in Roslyn needs extensive repairs and usage has continually declined over the years.

Belyea says the Parks Department is currently reevaluating whether to continue to use the pools or to put other recreation attractions there.

The pool serves as a venue for summer camps and a place for residents to cool off. The Olympic-sized facility has been a part of the community since 1961.

Some Long Islanders say they have fond memories of the pool and would be sad to see it close.

"I used to work at a summer camp in this park, it was really special to bring the kids to the pool," said Barry Hott, of Great Neck. "The local kids we would bring to the pool every day, and we'd use the little kiddie pool, the big pool, diving pool and it was just the memories that they would have created."

One person working at the park told News 12 he believes the pool will be closed permanently, but there has been no confirmation from officials.

A press conference regarding the pool is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Wednesday.
